Exhibition Background:

Africa has entered a new chapter of fast development in recent years thanks to vigorous efforts to drive forward industrialization. However, the continent enriched in natural resources and human workforce is still at the infant stage of industrialization. More than 30 years of reform and opening up has seen China become ready in terms of technology, hardware, manpower and capital strength to help Africa realizing its independent and sustainable development. Cooperation between the two is facing historical opportunities.

The Johannesburg Summit of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was held in December 2015. During this summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the idea of “Ten Major China-Africa Cooperation Plans”, aiming at helping Africa break through its three biggest development constraints, namely under-developed infrastructure, lack of qualified manpower and short of capital, so as to accelerate industrialization and agricultural modernization with the vision to realize independent and sustainable development. Under government guidance, these programs will be carried out mainly by enterprises based on market rules to achieve mutual benefits.

In response to President Xi’s call, a new upsurge of investment to Africa by Chinese enterprises happened in 2016, seeing a 25% increase of direct investment into non-financial sectors. Apart from traditional industries China used to invest, the new wave of investment to Africa also goes to sectors like communication, manufacturing, agriculture, financial and logistics. As a result, not only has the economic and trade bond between China and Africa undergone a fast transformation from common trade to production capacity cooperation, match-up of industries and transfer & upgrade of technologies, the business model also shifted from project contracting to investment and operation. Large number of Chinese companies and personnel are “taking root” in Africa.

Bilateral relationship between China and Kenya is at its best ever since. As one of the first African countries to pilot production capacity cooperation with China, Kenya plays a leading and exemplary role for Sino-African cooperation. In 2017, taking the construction of Mombasa-Nairobi Railway as opportunity, China is making efforts to help Kenya build the industrial and economic corridor realized through the integration of Mombasa Port and Mombasa-Nairobi Railway. A new cooperation structure featuring the integration of the Railway, the Port and the Mombasa Special Economic Zone is taking shape. Meanwhile, Kenya has been actively involved in China’s “Belt and Road” initiative with closer cooperation with China in respect to economy & trade, investment, energy, tourism and infrastructure development.

As the biggest promoter for investment and trade in China, the CCPIT will continue to help with Sino-African cooperation into deeper level. The China-Africa Production Capacity Cooperation Exhibition will serve as an effective and favorable platform to connect the two sides’ production capacity with each other’s needs as well as a bridge for better communication. It will present visitors with a comprehensive display of China’s success in sectors like railway, road, infrastructure, machinery, advanced manufacturing, processing of agricultural products and so forth and connect them with African needs.

As co-sponsors of the event, the Kenya Investment Authority and Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry will reach out to local government, industrial parks, manufacturing sites and the business circle through both governmental and nongovernmental channels and invite them to visit the exhibition. Investment promotion organizations from neighboring countries will also join in the build-up as more African countries (especially east Africa) are ready to take part.
