The 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC) Inaugurated

On the morning of May 18, the symposium was held at CPPCC Auditorium for the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC). Wang Anshun, Mayor of Beijing & Chairman of the CHITEC Organizing Committee, delivered a speech in the symposium. Attending the event were Li Meng (Vice Minister of Science and Technology); Lu Pengqi (CCPIT Vice President); Chen Lianzeng (Deputy Directer-general of State Oceanic Administration); Hao Yuan (Vice Governor of Gansu Province); Cheng Hong (Vice Mayor of Beijing); and Li Wei (Secretary-general of Beijing Municipal Government). The symposium was moderated by He Hua, Deputy Directer-general of State Intellectual Property Office of China. Also present in the activity were 1,000+ attendees from domestic and international government departments, and sci-tech and industrial communities, as well as participants from Beijing.

Wang Anshun addressed the symposium on behalf of the CHITEC Organizing Committee and Beijing Municipal Government. He said that CHITEC had been held for 18 times, making great contributions to promoting sci-tech innovations, thanks to the strong support of central departments and sister municipalities (provinces, autonomous regions) of Beijing, as well as active participation of organizations at home and abroad. Themed " Promoting scientific and technological innovation to lead industrial transformation ", the 19th CHITEC aims to showcase the latest sci-tech achievements, examine development approaches, and promote communication and cooperation, through a wide range of specialized exhibitions, forums, and project promotional activities. These efforts can be highly instrumental in developing new concepts and models for sci-tech industries, thus taking the Chinese economy up to mid- and high ends.

Currently, According to Wang, Beijing is energetically pursuing an "innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared" development, working vigorously to implement an innovation-driven strategy, striving to optimize the environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, and quickening the building of itself into a national sci-tech innovation center. Next, the city will step up its efforts towards the following aspects, said Wang.

First, boost original innovation and foster new engines for development. Targeting the new round of world sci-tech revolution and industrial transformation, Beijing will press ahead with fundamental and applied research in line with its socio-economic needs, in an effort to deliver more innovation achievements. It will deepen the implementation of the Beijing Technology Innovation Action Plan, dynamically nurture new technologies, new industries, and new business formats, and accelerate the translation of sci-tech achievements into practical productivity, thus bringing about an in-depth integration of sci-tech and socio-economic development.

Second, deepen structural reform and guide industrial transformation and upgrading. Beijing will let sci-tech innovation play a pivotal role in transferring the sector, space, and driving force of glutted industries, and in improving quality and efficiency of traditional industries. It will stay committed to the general direction towards high-end, service-centeredness, clustering, integration, and low carbon, strengthen the guiding role of industrial innovation and work harder to break through high-end technologies, foster forward-thinking industries and pillar industries, and quicken the formation of a sophisticated economic structure.

Third, embrace market orientation and highlight the central role of enterprises in innovation. The city will guide enterprises to strengthen technical innovation, make more innovation elements available to them, and improve an innovation mechanism led by enterprises. Beijing will better motivate medium and large sized enterprises to engage in innovation and make them more capable in resources integration, and guide small and micro businesses to pursue a business strategy with a focus on "new, professional, boutique, and distinctive" products and services. Meanwhile, it will encourage colleges, universities and research institutions to deepen partnerships with enterprises, and facilitate sound cross-sector, cross-industry collaborative innovation among diverse players.

Fourth, expand open sci-tech cooperation and promote mutually beneficial development. The city will intensify regional cooperation in sci-tech innovation, pivoting on the implementation of such major national strategies as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Collaborative Development, Yangtze River Economic Zone, and the "Belt and Road" Initiative. Beijing will be proactive in attracting international innovation resources, working more actively to integrate itself into the global innovation network, in a bid to constantly improve the city's worldwide influence in sci-tech innovation.

The symposium was graced by wonderful keynote speeches delivered by many distinguished speakers, including "Sci-tech in Transition" by Ms. Marielza Oliveira (UNESCO Chief Representative in China); "Natural Gas: An Easy Way Into Energy Revolution" by Sandra Lagumina (Executive Vice-President of Engie Group in France); "Enlightenment from Fundamental Research in Life Science" by Shi Yigong (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences & Vice President of Tsinghua University); "Accelerate Development of Smart Ocean and Guarantee the Marine Power Strategy" by Du Gang (Vice General Manager of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation); and "Upgrading of Smart Manufacturing of Cultural Industry in the Digital Age" by Xiao Hong (CEO of Beijing Perfect World Network Technology Co., Ltd).

Today's symposium marked the beginning of the 19th CHITEC. Participants of this year's event represent a wide range of backgrounds: two international organizations (WHO and UNESCO); 39 governmental, sci-tech, and business delegations from 34 countries and regions; governmental delegations from China's over 30 provinces, municipalities, , autonomous regions) and cities specifically designated in the state plan; as well as 1,500+ domestic and global new and high-tech firms, universities and research institutions, plus some of China's high-tech industrial parks and economic development zones.

Starting from May 19, the CHITEC will unfold an expo covering 45,000 m2, six specialized forums, and 12 sessions of trade promotion activities. The CHITEC will intensively showcase fresh achievements made by China as a result of implementing the innovation-driven strategy, demonstrate the latest development in the integration of sci-tech innovation and socio-economic development, and deliver some core technologies by independent innovation in key sectors and strategic industries, and display innovation results of sci-tech-life integration. Meanwhile, scores of heads of international organizations, noted experts, scholars and entrepreneurs both inside and outside China will speak on such hot topics as financial service innovation, circular economy and new-type urbanization, unsymmetrical catching-up strategy, the future path of smart cities; collaborative innovation of emerging industries, the ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship, and industrial transformation and upgrading. In addition, some key sci-tech and industry projects with good prospects will attract investment and seek partnerships globally. During May 19–22, would-be attendees can get free tickets with their ID cards in front of the gate of the China International Exhibition Center.

The CHITEC is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, State Intellectual Property Office, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and Beijing Municipal Government, and is organized by CCPIT Beijing Sub-council. Launched in 1998, it is now in its 19th year, serving as a five-in-one platform integrating comprehensive activities, expo, forums, trade promotions, and online display. To date, CHITEC has emerged as a landmark professional, international, and high-level event for local and foreign high-tech and related industries to display the latest technologies, disseminate forefront ideas, release information on industrial policies, and to promote international economic and technical cooperation.

According to incomplete statistics, the previous 18 sessions of CHITEC registered a total of 981 foreign governmental, sci-tech, and business delegations from over 100 countries and regions. More than 30,000 new and high-tech firms and research institutions showcased their latest achievements. Over 5 million attendees from all walks of life participated in these events. A total of nearly 1,000 sessions of high-level forums and exchanges around 208 specialized topics were held, with 5,074 well-known domestic and overseas scientists, economists, and leaders from famous enterprises having delivered speeches in these activities. A total of 205 sessions of promotion and negotiation activities for domestic and international investment cooperation, technology transaction, and key urban development projects were held, with 110,000 domestic and foreign businessmen having participated. Up to 5,208 contracts, agreements, and letters of intent were signed, involving a total value of RMB 843.222 billion.

The CHITEC effectively links up industry-university-research-application cooperation, and technically demonstrates the growth of new driving forces as well as the transformation and upgrading of traditional ones. It also serves as a highly significant platform for deepening international industrial capacity cooperation and extending sci-tech innovation space.
