On the afternoon of March 24, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Beijing Sub-council (CCPIT Beijing) co-hosted “Meeting Latin America” Online Economic and Trade Exchange together with CCPITs in Tianjin, Hebei, Shenyang, and Qingdao, the China Chamber of International Commerce, the Beijing International Economic and Technical Cooperation Association, and the Beijing Import and Export Enterprises Association. The exchange was chaired by Zhu Jialiang, Vice Chairman of CCPIT Beijing, and addressed by Briunny Garabito Segura, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Beijing. Counselor Carino Gonzalez, and Yue Yunxia, Director of the Economic Research Office of the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, respectively made special presentation on “Economic and Trade Environment in the Dominican Republic” and “Opportunities and Challenges Facing China-Latin America Economic and Trade Cooperation”. About 240 representatives from organizers and co-organizers, related business associations and enterprises in and outside Beijing participated in this exchange.

Ambassador Briunny Garabito Segura said that the day of May 1 marks the fourth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Dominican Republic. The two countries have conducted close exchanges and cooperation over the past four years in trade, investment, finance, agriculture, education, culture, sports and infrastructure, and Chinese enterprises have greatly increased their market share in medical equipment manufacturing, plastics, agriculture, footwear and mining in Dominican Republic. With stable social, political and economic environment, Dominican Republic is a catalyst for the regional economy of the Caribbean and Central America, and has recorded the highest economic growth in this region for 15 consecutive years. Thus, it has won the full trust of international investors and become the main destination for foreign investment in the Caribbean. The fields such as tourism, telecommunications, mining, construction, logistics, and services, especially free trade zones, are where foreign enterprises can quickly enter the markets of the United States, Europe, Central America and the Caribbean. Briunny Garabito Segura hoped that more Chinese enterprises will see Dominican Republic as an ideal platform for their foreign trade growth and maximize their access to the most important markets in western countries when favorable conditions are put in place. Counselor Carino Gonzalez stressed the economic and trade development situation, regional advantages and potential for foreign economic and trade cooperation, construction of free trade zones, and preferential policies in Dominican Republic. Director Yue Yunxia gave an overview on the status of China-Latin America economic and trade cooperation, as well as an in-depth analysis of the potential of China-Latin America cooperation under the new “dual circulation” development pattern, and the challenges and prospects facing China-Latin America economic and trade cooperation. Foreign guests also exchanged with Chinese experts and representatives during the meeting.

This meeting was highly recognized by representatives of foreign economic and trade enterprises as it helped them gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the economic and trade environment in Latin America and seize the opportunities of China-Latin America economic and trade cooperation, and opened up new space for such cooperation.
