The 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC) will be held in Beijing on May 18, 2016. In response to the call of the Chinese government to build China into a major maritime power and press ahead with the "Belt and Road" Initiative, the CHITEC Organizing Committee and State Oceanic Administration (SOA) will co-sponsor the 3rd International Marine Sci-Tech & Marine Economy Expo and 2016 International Marine Sci-Tech & Project Cooperation Meeting in conjunction with official bodies of multiple maritime states, with a view to promoting international maritime exchange and cooperation, discussing marine technical innovation and marine economy model. This year's event is a successor to the 2014 International Marine Sci-Tech & Project Cooperation Meeting.

The Expo and the Meeting will serve as a national and international platform for exchange, cooperation and trade of marine science and technology, ocean engineering equipment and maritime services. During the 17th CHITEC in 2014, the 2nd International Marine Sci-Tech & Marine Economy Expo and 2014 International Marine Sci-Tech & Project Cooperation Meeting, co-sponsored by the CHITEC Organizing Committee and SOA, were successfully held in Beijing. The Expo and the Meeting were supported and graced by the Embassies in China of German, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Italian Trade Commission (ICE), as well as international organizations including Eni S.p.A, Campus Do Mar, Pegaso Canton Srl, and Eco Dream Asia (EDA). Also present in the Expo and the Meeting were representatives from more than 160 sea-related enterprises and organizations, including marine departments (bureaus) from 11 coastal provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China, entities subordinate to SOA, research institutions and universities such as Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang University, sea-related central enterprises such as CNOOC and CSSC, as well as overseas enterprises like OPTIMARE, VisionMap, and XpertSea. The event delivered remarkable results and multiple consensuses and cooperation agreements were reached between governments and enterprises and among enterprises in fields such as ocean engineering equipment, marine biomedicine, and ocean information service.

During this year's CHITEC, the 3rd International Marine Sci-Tech & Marine Economy Expo to be held in the No.3 Pavilion of the old China International Exhibition Center will, in line with the national strategies of “Construction of Maritime Power” and “Building of Maritime Silk Road in the 21st Century”, put a high value on marine science and technology innovation, strengthen international cooperation, highlight matchmaking and trade, and intensively showcase China’s major national maritime scientific and technological achievements as well as foreign and domestic new technologies, new products and new achievements involving fields such as marine oil and gas & ship engineering, marine biomedicine, seawater desalination, ocean exploration, ports, and marine economic zones.

The concurrent 2016 International Marine Sci-Tech & Project Cooperation Meeting aims at promoting marine science and technology communication and sea-related project cooperation negotiation among maritime states. It is expected that over 300 organizations and enterprises from maritime states including China, the United States, Germany, Italy, Canada, Korea as well as ASEAN countries like Singapore and Thailand will participate in the event.
